Lose Weight by Gaining Awareness

Binge eating, compulsive eating, overeating, mindless eating, emotional eating, nervous eating, eating to feel good, or just plain overeating? If so, you are not alone. In one of the late comic George Carlin's routines, he asked the audience if they ever stood in the kitchen and ate a whole box of cookies, just staring at the clock. At first, there were a few nervous giggles, and then, as Carlin's pantomime emphasized the mindlessness of compulsive eating, the laughter escalated as many in the audience saw themselves up there on the stage.

Becoming Aware

One of the most important steps in counseling individuals for weight loss, compulsive overeating and binge eating is helping you understand why you have not been able to do what you want to do -- stay on your diet, control your weight, control your appetite, achieve your weight-loss goal. Problem is, you cannot make permanent lifestyle changes of any kinds until you really know and accept yourself. Acceptance and understanding of one's self is the first step in acquiring an attitude of discipline.

In our sessions, we'll identify stressors that continually stimulate you to do the very action or behaviors you may try so hard to change or avoid. Many times, these stressors are coupled with anxiety about dieting and other weight-related issues, or far too much focus on your personal appearance as a measure of self worth.

Working together during our group or individual weight-loss counseling sessions, I will help you understand your experiences as they evolve. When faced with opportunities to overeat or binge and purge, you will learn to identify your emotions accurately and respond with greater security and confidence. Instead of reacting with compulsive eating, you will be able to choose responses that allow you to lose weight sensibly, effortlessly and without hunger.

In addition to achieving greater emotional health, you will have solid guidelines on exercise and nutrition. You'll learn how much exercise is enough, how and what to eat, and what to do about cravings for "treats and starches" or "something greasy" that keep you in destructive eating patterns.

Group Classes Now Forming

Now you can receive individualized attention along with the support of a group that has similar concerns and goals. We are accepting inquiries for group counseling sessions with up to four individuals, meeting weekly for 10 weeks. Fees for each session are $40 per person, weekly for a group of four, or $50 per person weekly for a group of three. Contact our office at (512) 306-9992 or complete the form far below to let us know of your interest. Please let us know the best weekdays and times to suit your schedules.

Obesity As a Health Concern

Obesity threatens our collective health and puts many at risk for cardiovascular disease, diabetes, high blood pressure and even some forms of cancer. There are many reasons that 61% of our population is overweight. In our culture we can get almost anything we want, 24 / 7. We don't have to milk the cow, gather the eggs or mill the grain. When we go out to eat, "big" is often seen as best in food serving sizes.

Obesity treatment is no quick fix. Compared to other weight loss strategies -- even lap band surgery -- the right treatment plan, including cognitive, behavioral-based therapy, can help you overcome what may seem like addictions to food or sugar. Rather than yo-yo dieting, weight loss counseling can help you achieve permanent change without diet pills or risky surgery. You will acquire an attitude of discipline and mindfulness, being in the moment, learning how to relax. Most importantly, you can take charge of your life and attain enlightening self-wisdom.

Several outside resources that may assist you are the Schwarzbein Principle, by Diana Schwarzbein, M.D., Ultrametabolism by Mark A. Hyman, M.D., and You on a Diet, by Michael F. Roizen, M.D., and Mehmet C. Oz, M.D. I incorporate ideas from these experts in my weight loss counseling and dieting programs and encourage you to review their books.
